Now the big argument on Capitol Hill is over House Speaker Nancy Pelosi's mode of transportation to Washington. As third in line to be president, she's entitled to a government plane. Question is, how big and what type.
Pelosi argues she needs one with enough fuel capacity to get to DC non-stop from her home state of California, and that's bigger than the one her predecessor, Dennis Hastert had.
Her GOP detractors say suck it up and take the standard plane, no more or less than what other speakers have had.
One might argue convincingly that the speaker and her entourage could fly coach most of the time and simply have an Air Force jet on stand-by in case of the unlikely scenario that something happens to the president, vice president and secretary of state.
This should be determined by experts. So here's the quick and easy solution for Ms. Pelosi: Keep Hastert's Gulfstream while a panel of independent, bipartisan experts studies the issue and agree to be bound by their findings -- including giving up any designated aircraft if that's what they deem appropriate.
That's the best way to satisfy all sides of the argument.
