"I'm in the private sector and for the first time in my life I'm earning money," [Tommy] Thompson told the Religious Action Center of Reform Judaism. "You know that's sort of part of the Jewish tradition and I do not find anything wrong with that."
This guy wants to be president. The Repiblican former secretary of health and human services for Bush said that with a straight face last week. He later apologized and said he was simply congratulating Jews on their success in America. If he wants to be taken seriously, he needs to now do two things:
1. Tour some of the social service facilities in New York and elsewhere that specialize in providing a safety net to tens of thousands of poor, near poor and struggling Jews -- most of them elderly and/or immigrants -- and put aside his stereotypes long enough to get some real statistics.
2. Get an advisor who can teach him a thing or two about actual Jewish tradition so when he talks he won't sound like a dope.
